On May 15th 2013, The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq, Ambassador Mohammed Ali Hakim, Deputy Permanent Representative Mr. William Ishaia Odisho and Chancellor Sarhad Sardar, at the headquarters of the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, received the Assyrian delegation who participates in the 13th Permanent Forum for Indigenous Peoples which began on May 12th 2014 and runs until May 23rd 2014, at the headquarters of the United Nations/New York. The delegation represents the Assyrian Aid Society of Iraq and the Assyrian Universal Alliance - America branch.

 

the Permanent Representative and his deputy and Mr. Sarhad welcomed Assyrian delegation and stressed on the importance role of non-governmental organizations in Iraq in establishing the principles of human rights and ethnic diversity and religious in Iraq, which is a source of enriching civilization, the meeting discussed the progress of infrastructure's rehabilitation and the progress of education in the areas inhabited by Assyrians in Iraq and the importance of applying the political, economic and cultural rights approved by the Iraqi constitution for all the Iraqis.

 

It is worth mentioning that the work of the 13th  Permanent Forum of Indigenous Peoples held this year under the title of "Principles of good governance consistent with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples: Articles 3 to 6 and Article 46 of the declaration", this year's forum distinguishes with the participation of a wide range of representatives of Indigenous Peoples from around the world and representatives of all countries of the world , and the member states of the UN, as well as representatives of international and global organizations, where the forum was opened by the attendance of UN Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Who gave a speech in which he highlighted the most prominent achieved so far, since the launch of the first forum of indigenous peoples and the mechanics of the work, the way up to UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the forthcoming international conference of indigenous peoples.

 

The Participate of Assyrian Aid Society of Iraq and the Assyrian Universal Alliance in this forum acts as non- governmental organization (NGOs) which have consultative status at the Economic and Social Council, which is one of the principal organs of the General Assembly of the United Nations. The delegation representing the Assyrian Aid Society of Iraq is Ms. Shoushan Tower and Miss. Nora Michael, while representing of the Assyrian Universal Alliance-American of are Ms. Rose Marie Younan, Mr. Allen Mirza & Mr. Matthew Thomas.
