Erbil / Susan Youkhana

 

In coordination with Erbil branch of the Assyrian women Union, the President of the Assyrian Aid Society of Iraq, Mr. Ashur Eskrya, on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 delivered his lecture on the (UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous) on Dam-Eil Hall at the Women Union, Erbil branch.

 

Initially, the responsible of Union for Erbil branch, Ms. Marlin Yousef welcomed the attendants, then Mr. Ashur gave a brief about the Assyrian Aid Society in Iraq, and then talked about the involvement of the Society in the Permanent Forum of indigenous peoples which yearly held by the United Nations, and during the lecture Mr. Eskrya highlighted the importance of participating in this forum, as also touched upon the subject of the UN Declaration on Indigenous Peoples and the definition of the most important basic material in the declaration, Such as the indigenous peoples having their fully rights as an individual or groups recognized in the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and international law, human rights and the right to self-determination and their right to practice their cultural traditions, customs, preservation of their territories, also they cannot be carried over from their lands or territories forcibly, and their right to establish educational systems and institutions and the teaching in their own language.

 

The lecture was attended by Ms. Marlin, the responsible of Erbil branch for the Assyrian Women Union and Mr. Ogin Zaia, the responsible of Erbil branch for the Chaldoassyrian Student and Youth Union and a number of members of the Erbil Branch for Women's & Student Union as well as members of the Assyrian Aid Society - Iraq and a number of intellectuals and those interested in issues our People as an indigenous People, as the lecture was enriched by many interventions and questions answered by AAS-I President.
